Forget Work / Life Balance - Introducing Work / Life Harmony

There are a couple of topics that I tend to get up on a soapbox about.

I am passionate about empowering women to believe in themselves and stop believing the stories that have been holding them back.

I am positively preachy when it comes to taking care of yourself in order to take care of others.

I believe whole heartedly in breaking down the walls that women have put themselves behind because, “Well, that’s just how things are done.”

And I cannot stand the phrase (and concept of) “work / life balance.”

Work / Life Balance - sounds great, doesn’t it? The whole concept of a beautifully balanced life with everyone happy with you and no one demanding more and everything cooperating just the way you need it to.

Sounds more like a fairy tale, doesn’t it? Because life isn’t balanced. At least not when you look at it in the short-term. Long term, yes, I can see how life is balanced. But in the next seven days? Not so much.

Hang on a second, Angela - are you telling us that we should NOT strive for work / life balance?

Yes. And no. I’m saying that there’s a better way.

Balance means equality. It means that you’re spending AS MUCH time working as you are on yourself. That you’re EVENLY dividing your time among your different interests. That EVERYTHING in your life is getting the “right amount” of attention.

Life happens. Work happens. Opportunities pop up and disappear. Doors open and windows close. It’s the way of the world. And the world turns in seasons.

I gave up striving for “work / life balance” a long time ago. I found myself constantly frustrated, always second guessing myself and my decisions - was I spending ENOUGH time with my kids? Was I allowed to ENJOY working so much? Why do I ALWAYS feel guilty?

I’ve spent years reshaping my view on this. I no longer work for “work / life balance.” I now aim to have “work / life harmony.”

What’s the difference? At a high level, it’s my way of allowing myself to work with life rather than trying to force it into something that isn’t actually attainable. Work / Life Harmony is all about:

  • Taking care of yourself so that you can take care of others

  • Using your natural energy patterns to figure out how to get the most important stuff done

  • Giving yourself permission to be where you are (even if it’s not ideal) and take steps to get to where you want to be

  • It’s about enjoying your life so that you have energy to do your work

  • It’s about doing work that energizes you and makes you feel good so that your life can thrive
